More Czech Writers

Am reading a few books simultaneously, one of which is Bringing Up Girls in Bohemia by Michal Viewegh. A crisp lightness to balance a weightier tome I'd been reading by Kishore Mahbubani, Beyond the Age of Innocence. A former UN diplomat, Mahbubani makes some good points about what America can do to regain the respect it once held in the world. Though it should come as no surprise that the current Administration is taking a decidedly different approach.

I had read an excerpt from one of Viewegh's earlier novels in an anthology of Czech literature, Daylight in Nightclub Inferno. Spurred my interest enough to seek out the current book. Originally published in 1994, it's a satire on Czech life shortly after the Velvet Revolution. The depiction of the nouveau riche (and other questionable characters) in Prague and their escapades, is pretty funny. And telling.
